Rail News 24-02-14 Historic Pamban bridge turns 100 today Pamban (PBM): The historic Pamban Railway Bridge, India’s first cantilever bridge, that connects Rameshwaram island in Tamil Nadu to mainland India turns 100 on Monday. The 143 piers, 2.06 km engineering marvel was the country’s longest bridge until 2010 when the 2.3-km Bandra-Worli sea link in Mumbai was thrown open for traffic. Govt likely to merge dearness allowance with basic pay Zee Media Bureau New Delhi: The Union Cabinet could approve a proposal to merge dearness allowance (DA) with basic pay, benefiting about 50 lakh central government employees and 30 lakh pensioners. The Cabinet may also hike dearness allowance (DA) by 10 percent to 100 percent. As per practice, the DA is merged with basic pay when it breaches the 50 percent mark. DA merger helps employees as their other allowances are paid as a proportion of basic pay. The government had announced a hike of 10 percent to 90 percent in September last year, effective from July 1, 2013.

Railways to introduce ticket punching system to enter or exit any Railway Station in India Rail News 17 Feb 2014 No More Free Rides As Railways Punch In Metro Style Gates Free riders will now have to cough up the fare as Indian Railways will soon go the Delhi Metro way. Passengers will be required to punch their train tickets to enter or exit any railway station. Indian Railways, which loses over Rs 1,000 crore every year due to ticketless travel, is planning to start first trials of the new system by March at Delhi’s Anand Vihar and Uttarakhand’s Kathgodam Railway Stations. The railways has decided to put automatic entry and exit gates at both the stations to ensure that only passengers having a valid ticket can enter or exit the stations. These automatic gates would be equipped with ticket reader and scanner and it would be mandatory for passengers to punch their tickets.

He has performed in most Indian languages except   Assamese ,   Konkani   and   Kashmiri . He also composed a number of Malayalam film songs in the 1970s and 1980s. CRS submits Report on Bangalore-Nanded Train fire – cites passengers’ negligence a root cause Source: the Rail News Bangalore:  The preliminary investigation report by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), Bangalore, has noted that an “advertent act or act of negligence on the part of unidentified passenger(s) or person(s)” was the probable cause of fire in the AC coach-B1 of Bangalore-Nanded Express on December 28, 2013, which claimed 26 lives. The report, which has been sent to Chief Commissioner, Railway Safety, by CRS Bangalore S K Mittal, on Thursday, states that the accident is classified under category “Error in working near railway line.”

Over 2.5 lakh vacant posts in Railways December 13, 2013 New Delhi: Over 2.5 lakh posts are lying vacant in Railways, Rajya Sabha was informed on Friday. The total number of vacancies in railways is 2,51,936 as on April 2013, Minister of State for Railways Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said in a written reply. While Northern Railway has the maximum number of vacant posts (28,958), followed by Eastern Railway (24,052), South Western Railway has minimum number of vacancies (6,336).

Railways to pay Rs 60,000 to former H.C judge for changing seat January 22, 2014 New Delhi: The Railways have been directed by a consumer forum here to pay Rs 60,000 as punitive damages to a retired High Court judge and his family for the "hardship" faced by them due to shifting of their seats to another coach without informing them. The New Delhi District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum said that the facts show the Railways attempted to accommodate some other persons in place of the reserved seats for the complainants, resulting in "avoidable hardship, inconvenience, humiliation and harassment to the judge". The forum also noted in its order that the Railways "resorted to falsehood" to defend their conduct instead of straightaway expressing regret. Nanded train fire  probably caused by passengers, Railway probe Thursday, January 30 Bangalore: The devastating fire in Bangalore- Nanded Express train in Andhra Pradesh that left 26 dead was "most probably" caused due to negligence by unidentified passengers, a provisional Railway probe into the December 28 incident said. The Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) Southern Region, who carried out the probe, also recommended switching off power points provided for charging laptops and mobile phones in AC coaches between 10 pm and 6 am. "The December 28 accident was most probably caused by advertent act or by an act of negligence on the part of unidentified passenger(s) or person(s)," said Satish Kumar Mittal, CRS Southern Region in his provisional findings. Quoting the report of the Andhra Pradesh Forensic Science Laboratory (APFSL), the CRS said no signs of explosion were found in the burnt coach and ruled out sabotage as cause of the fire, which

Wait listed passengers will soon get status messages in their mobile phones if their tickets get confirmed before journey. New Delhi: Waitlisted passengers will soon get status messages in their mobile phones if their tickets get confirmed before journey. A senior Railway Ministry official said the waitlisted passenger will get a SMS about the status of the ticket on the mobile phone number given at the time of ticket booking before the journey. Currently, one has to either dial the enquiry number 139 or use the Internet to know the waitlisted ticket status. Others get to know the status of their tickets only after reaching stations. "Once the SMS-based service is operational, passengers will get the updated status of their waitlisted tickets automatically," the official said, adding "only those passengers will get the message whose tickets get confirmed." CRIS, the technological arm of Railways, is making the software for the SMS-based service. IRCTC

Generally people have to suffer in the journey as their tickets doesn’t confirm even if they have made reservations much before the date of journey. Strike threat: Railway board agrees to National Federation of Indian Railwaymen's demands TNN | Feb 9, 2014,  VADODARA: Railway Board has agreed on charter of demands put before it by National Federation of Indian Railwaymen (NFIR). NFIR, the railway union, had threatened to go on strike after taking a strike ballot last month in which over 97 per cent employees had voted in favour of general strike. On Friday, railway board's chairman Arunendra Kumar and a member staff had a meeting with the railway employees union in which NFIR's general secretary M Raghavaiah, president Guman Singh and working president R P Bhatnagar represented NFIR. During the meeting, the railway board agreed to NFIR's demand of scrapping the new pension scheme which was imposed from January 1, 2004.
