Madurai Division records growth in overall earnings


  Madurai (MDU):  The Madurai railway division has bagged the inter-divisional overall efficiency – Best Division – award for its performance and earnings in the last financial year. Subsequently, the revenue of the division has also shot up during that period.
Delivering his address at 59th Railway Week Celebrations on Wednesday, DRM A K Rastogi announced that the division recorded a growth of 10% in overall earnings and 15% in passenger earnings as compared to the previous fiscal. The total originating earnings for the year 2013-14 is Rs 576.29 crore as against the 2012-13 actual of Rs 523.68 crore. The passenger earning was Rs 389.98 crore as against Rs 338.70 crore for the previous year. Following the strict action taken against passengers travelling without proper tickets, the division has realised Rs 2.84 crore in ticket checking earnings. The commercial publicity earnings accounted to Rs 3.94 crore showing a 13% increase over the last year, Rastogi said.
With the intention to provide more passenger facilities for the rising passenger numbers, the division has completed amenity work estimated at Rs 6.37 crore during last year. On the punctuality front, the division achieved 96.2% for express and mail trains and 96.8% for passenger trains against the target of 96 per cent. “This was possible because of the hard work and outstanding contribution by the running staff and better maintenance of track and other infrastructure by our staff,” he said. The division also managed to introduce new trains including the Palani – Chennai Central Express, Manamadurai – Chennai Egmore Silambu Express, Tuticorin – Chennai Egmore Link Express,
Rameswaram – Coimbatore Weekly Express, Puducherry – Kanyakumari Weekly Express,
Palani- Tiruchendur passenger, Tirunelveli – Shencottah passenger, Punalur – Guruvayur passenger and Tirunelveli – Kanyakumari passenger. Several trains were also extended to various parts of the division, while some of the trains’ frequency was increased during the last financial year .

Several special trains were also operated for clearing the extra rush besides augmentation of coaches in regular trains, the DRM announced. Cash awards and merit certificates were distributed to officers and stations for their performance and maintenance. Railway school students performed cultural events during the celebrations.
