Coaches are old 70% rail coaches in Kerala over 25 years old: Minister TNN | Feb 4, 2014,  THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Minister Aryadan Muhammed has said that 70% railway coaches plying in the state are old and rusting.  Replying to a question in the assembly on Monday, the minister in charge of railway said most of these coaches were over 25 years old and were unfit for use. The state had written to the Union railway ministry to phase out such coaches in five years. Though the minister's reply was in connection with an incident of a coach breaking into two near Alappuzha, it came a day after a coach of  Kochuveli-Bangalore Express breaking into two while shunting at the Kochuveli railway station. The minister said the state government had also asked the railways to upgrade the coach repairing units at Thiruvananthapuram and Ernakulam so that all major repair works could be undertaken here itself. Shunting Shock: Accident to Kochuveli-Bangalore Express train leaves S-14 like rusted tin T hiruvananthapuram (TVC): A sleeper coach of Kochuveli-Bangalore Express was squashed like rusted tin, leaving its hind quarters in the air, when the rakes were being shunted at Kochuveli. The incident took place around 3.30 pm on Sunday before the train was to depart, raising the bogey of what could have unfolded in the event of real crash with passengers on board. Second class sleeper coach S-14 almost broke into two, with portion of the coach collapsing over the track. Besides S-14, two other sleeper coaches suffered damage. The train had total of 24 coaches. Divisional Railway Manager (Thiruvananthapuram) Sunil Bajpai, admitting that the coach was unpardonably old.
